Srirangam - Chithirai Festival

The Chithirai Car Festival is an important annual event of the Srirangam Temple, with origins traced back to the Vijayanagara dynasty. Every year, this 11-day festival is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm by worshippers from all over India. On the first day of the festival, a grand flag hoisting or Dhwajarrohanam takes place in honour of Virupanna Udayar. But perhaps one of the most well-known aspects of this ancient Hindu celebration is when on tenth day, Lord Namperumal--along with His consorts Sri Sridevi and Sri Bhoodevi--is brought out for procession through town atop different Vahanas (Vehicles), like the Simha Vahanam or silver/gold horse Vahanam which symbolise power and strength as much they astound onlookers! If you've ever been fortunate enough to experience this incredible spectacle firsthand, then you understand why it's so popular among devotees around Tamil Nadu.
