The Kulumayae Thiruvila is an ancient Hindu festival traditionally held in Puthur, India. It's a unique festival celebrated by the Devendra Kula Velallar Pallan community and three Iyers during eclipses. At its centern is the powerful goddess Kulumaye amman, who was believed to be more potent than eclipses themselves and capable of solving astrological problems for those who worship her. The origin of this revered deity goes all the way back to Southern India when it was said that blood spurted forth from the earth after members of the Pallan community began digging for water for agriculture. This incident then prompted Rettamalai Ondi karuppu (the protecting god) to request a goat sacrifice with an old bronze knife in order to defeat a sorcerer intent on capturing Kulumayae amman's power. In addition to offering vigil before her temple even during an eclipse, devotees drank Surahi filled with goat's blood from silver dishes while Iyers also momentumary pay homage with prayers tailored specifically towards flourished their beloved goddess.
